Spalted Beech Wood Bowl

Description

I always love to turn Splated beech because the end result is always very different. The Inky markings of the spaltedness are completely unique, almost like the woods own finger print. I also, for fun, like to study or stare stare at the markings to see what they might look like. Sometimes nothing comes to mind, or something just jumps out at you. Everyone sees something different!

The common name Beech comes from the "Norse" Buche or Bok which also means book. A straight and lofty tree the Beech belongs to the same family as the Oak. The light, brown, hard and heavy timber is close and even in texture, with a fine silky grain, making it strong and durable, sending its roots deep into the earth.

Spalting is a by-product of the rotting process that is carried out by a vast array of stain, mold and decay fungi, that are found naturally on the forest floor. When the temperature and humidity are right, spalting can cause many different and beautiful patterns in rotting wood. Then the piece of wood is removed from the forest floor and hand turned on the lathe. The rot stops and the beauty is brought to the surface.
